Christopher is a performer/composer/improviser who continues to garner popular and critical acclaim in 28 countries on 5 continents for his performances and original compositions for indigenous breath and percussion instruments of Mesoamerica/Mexico and India alongside either classical guitar, marimba, pedal harp, piano, violin, woodwind quintet and/or mixed chamber ensemble. 

He attended CALIFORNIA INSTITUTE OF THE ARTS on a full scholarship to study the drumming of North India with Pandit Taranath Rao, John Bergamo, Leonice Shinneman, and Swapan Chaudhuri as well as 20th western percussion music involving percussion and chamber music including marimba and multiple percussion performances. He continues to be a frequently invited as a guest soloist to perform with chamber and symphonic orchestras throughout Europe and the Americas on instruments not usually associated with “western classical music”,including North Indian tabla, South Indian kanjira and ghatam, and Tlapan huehuetl, teponaztli, huilacapiztli, atecocolli and more.

John Stephens is a sitar, surbahar and sarode player based in Los Angeles. He earned his bachelor’s in music from Berklee College of Music (2006), majoring in Jazz Composition. After living in India for a year, he went on to earn his MFA in North Indian music at CalArts (2011).  John continues to learn from maestro Ustad Aashish Khan, eldest son of Ustad Ali Akbar. Aashish Khan learned primarily from his grandfather, Baba Allauddin Khan, who was one of the most influential musicians in the history of Hindustani music, having taught Pandit Ravi Shankar, Ustad Ali Akbar Khan, and many others. John began his training with Aashish Khan in 2009, after spending four years learning sitar from Pandit Amarnath Mishra in Banaras. 

John is a performing musician, recording artist, music and podcast producer, and music educator. In addition to teaching privately, he is a regular teacher at the California State Summer School for the Arts, and substitute teacher for world music faculty at CalArts. He is also a published author on ancient Indian microtonal theory, and his article, “The Microtones of Bharata’s Natyashastra,” appears in Volume 6 of Analytical Approaches to World Music 

He has given many North Indian classical performances for various occasions including concert programs, competitions, lecture/demonstrations, private concerts, holiday programs and film scores. 

These include performances at Cornell University, Ithaca College, Pasadena City College, the 24th Annual Indian Music and Dance Competition at the University of Maryland Baltimore County, the California Institute of the Arts, the Sangati Center, private recitals in Boston, Ithaca, Baltimore, Seattle, and Varanasi, India, and appearances as tanpura accompanist for Ustad Aashish Khan, Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri, and Sri Alam Khan at the annual Music Circle concerts,
the Ojai Music Festival and the University of California, Santa Barbara.

He currently resides in Los Angeles, CA where he is teaching and performing. He is a member of ASCAP and a teacher of North Indian classical music at the California State Summer School for the Arts as well as being a frequent composer/performer/collaborator with Christopher Garcia in ANADIS MUSIC.
